So last night my main squeeze and I celebrated our second annual Amish Culture Date Night.  This entails no technology (witchcraft), no electricity (also witchcraft), no cursing (lest ye face the whip), ridiculous Amish inspired names (Amos, Shenandoah, and Lilith for life), and homemade baked goods.  Remind me to never again prepare homemade pies when the apartment is a sauna… Things worked out in the end, but it wasn’t pretty getting there.  All in all the drama was worth the effort, because ain’t to party like an Amish Funeral Pie party.  Especially when eaten by candlelight.  Bon app y’all.

We swapped out the raisins and used craisins.  Also I used nutmeg instead of allspice, didn’t do the orange rind bullshit, and made my own pie crusts with my mom’s recipe. AMISH FUNERAL PIE
Pastry for 9″ two crust pie
2 c. raisins, seedless
2 c. water
1/2 c. sugar
1/2 c. brown sugar
3 tbsp. cornstarch
3 tbsp. butter
1 tbsp. cider vinegar
2 tsp. ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp. ground allspice
1 tsp. orange rind, grated
Speck of salt
Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Roll out the pie crusts and line pan with half. In a medium saucepan, simmer the raisins and 2/3 cup of water over medium heat for 5 minutes. In a bowl, combine sugars, cornstarch, cinnamon, allspice and salt. Gradually stir in the remaining 1 1/3 cup water. Add to the raisins, stirring until the mixture bubbles up.Add the vinegar, butter and orange rind and continue cooking until the butter melts. Cool mixture until it is almost lukewarm. Pour into unbaked shell. Top with second crust and cut decorative holes in the top to allow steam to escape. Bake 25 minutes. Cool completely.
